Work restrictions of student visa holders change from 1 July 2023

Considering the post Pandemic labor shortages in Australia. The Government of Australia decided to temporarily abolish the work restrictions imposed on the student visa holders. Therefore, in the beginning of 2022 all work restrictions on student visa holders and their partners were completely relaxed. Nonetheless, these privileges are temporary as the Australian Government plans on reintroducing it; this time with a maximum cap of working hours at 48 per fortnight. The new work restrictions will come in effect from 1 July 2023. Student visa holders currently working in aged care sector will remain unaffected by the new change and can continue to work in the same sector with no work restrictions until 31 December 2023.
The policy reinstatement emphasizes the need for students to focus mainly on obtaining an excellent education as well as qualification while still having adequate finances and contributing significantly to meet Australia’s workforce needs through valuable job experiences gained during study periods.
Student visa holders must understand that failure to adhere to these regulations may lead to severe consequences associated with their student visa. Moreover, students must prioritize their academic endeavours rather than put pressure solely on paid employment opportunities in Australia.
