The Australian Government has recently made an important announcement regarding the closure of the Pandemic Event visa, commonly referred to as the Covid Visa (Subclass 408).
Closure of Pandemic Event Visa:
Effective from February 2024, the Covid visa will no longer be available for new applicants. According to the Australian Government, this move is aimed at stabilising the visa process and ensuring the reliability of the overall visa system. The gradual phasing out of the Pandemic Event visa demonstrates the government’s dedication to prioritising the needs of Australians, as well as addressing issues such as processing delays and backlogs.
Transition Period and Covid Visa Eligibility:
From September 2, 2023, only current holders of the Pandemic Event visa (Subclass 408) will be eligible to apply for extensions. New applications for this visa category will no longer be accepted.
Impact on Current Covid Visa Holders:
Existing Covid visa holders can rest assured that their visas will remain active until their stated expiration dates.
Recent changes in work rights of international students and Working Holiday visa holders:
The Australian Government has taken further steps to manage the situation by discontinuing special work allowances for international students and Working Holiday visa holders. This strategic move is intended to control the influx of individuals coming to Australia following the pandemic, thereby promoting a controlled growth in population.
Revised Terms for New Visa Applications:
From September 2, 2023, new applications for the Covid visa will be granted for a duration of six months. Additionally, applicants will be required to pay a Visa Application Charge of $405 AUD.
